Risk Management: other standards and guidance

There are a number of national and international standards and national guidance relating to aspects of protection, risk management, crisis management, business continuity, resilience, climate change adaptation and hazard mitigation.

Organisations with cultural collections in the UK are encouraged to have a commitment to a risk management approach through PAS197 : 2009, which is a code of practice but not a standard and therefore is not enforceable. This requires risk assessment and risk management plans to be put in place. The content and core concepts of the BSI PAS 197 have also been used to create A Practical Guide to Collections Management by Susanna Hillhouse (Collections Trust).

The principal international standard for business continuity is BS ISO 22301 which builds on the success of British Standard BS 25999 and other regional standards. It’s designed to protect your business from potential disruption by developing ad hoc plans according to the type of threats your organisation can face.

There are useful standards for risk management, and crisis management, and guidance on organisational resilience, and adapting to climate change through business continuity plans. The British Standards Institution (BSI) also publishes guidance on fire risk assessments, fire strategies and a standard on fire detection and alarm systems.

UNESCO has released guidance on Reducing Disaster Risks at World Heritage Properties as, despite their importance, many sites lack risk management plan.
